Glasgow means Green Place
Stacy opted out of today’s Glasgow History Walking Tour to catch up on some sleep and hopefully stave off a head cold. I quick left him quarantined with plenty of fluids and pastries from the restaurant and ran out of the room. Wonder if he can sleep in a face mask with his c-pap?
We had a delightful day for a walk in the city. It started at the Mitchell Library and St Andrews Hall which was significant as it was here that both Bro Russell and Bro Rutherford gave talks in our theocratic history.
The truth grew exponentially in Scotland. In 1884, there were 7 in attendance at the Memorial. By 1903, there were 70 at the Memorial. By 1920?, the 3rd largest JW gathering in the world was in Glasgow with 794 — another 10-fold increase!!!! And by 1927, there was 10,000 in attendance for a lecture “Highway to Life” in an auditorium with capacity for 5,000 - the other 5,000 stood outside to listen.
Sign above door way to Glasgow University is actually based off John 14:6.
And below it, the inscription is a prayer “Lord, let Glasgow flourish through the preaching of your word.”
The hardworking Scotland friends were all over the city. They were in costumes strategically placed throughout our tour to bring some of the theocratic history to life. And they were tirelessly moving from one assignment to another throughout the entire convention. Here is a few of the things our dear brother Sean did for the delegates: Airport greeter, Kingdom Hall Ministry program A/V (for a triple hall that converts into an assembly hall), Wednesday walking tour, Contribution boxes at the convention and then our walking tour on Monday. It was estimated that for a convention this size, 8,000 volunteers would be needed. But the 4,500 volunteers rose to the challenge - we didn’t want for anything. And seeing them wearing so many different hats just warmed our hearts.
